"Saving Private Ryan" by Steven Spielberg: a review
Set in a variety of battled fields in World War 2, Saving Private Ryan portrays the kindness of man and the hell of war. Saving Private Ryan is about a soldier who has 3 other brothers who have died in separate battles. Private Ryan is the only brother left alive. Captain Ryan (Tom Hanks) and his company are assigned the task of finding Private Ryan so he can be sent back to the states. Believe me, this task is more than using airsoft guns.
The movie begins with a mind-numbing 45 minute battle between the allied and German forces on the beaches of Normandy. This scene sets the tone of the movie. A special moment in this scene is where Captain Miller says Dog One Is Open!" The allied forces pushed through the german lines and opened a way for a final push on the beaches of Normandy. You'll see soldier take an army knife from an enemy soldier towards the end of this scene. Touching, as the US soldier is Jewish.
The movie continues with a scene of a soldier lying face down in the water with the last name of Ryan. Three Ryan brothers are dead. When word has spread back to the states, this is when General George Marshall states in a letter to their mother with a famous movie quote in the movie: "Nothing, not even the safe return of a beloved son, can compensate you, or the thousands of other American families, who have suffered great loss in this tragic war."
The movie continues with the search of Private Ryan (Matt Damon) to return him home. When he is finally found, he refuses to leave. In between these scenes are wonderful WWII scenes that only Steven Spielberg can portray.
If you are a fan of history, World War 2, action movies and the determination of man, Saving Private Ryan will not let you down.
