Plot – Africa. Young Agu spends his time playing with his older brother and friends in a refugee camp where he lives with his family. His happy everyday life, however, is interrupted by the arrival of army troops called to choke a rebellion against the corrupt regime of the country. Agu's mother and sister manage to flee to a nearby town, but Agu, who stays behind with his father and brother, is soon left alone. Terrified, Agu flees into the forest where he discovers a company of young rebels led by a charismatic leader. He joins them; the child goes through tough training, finds a kindred spirit in his mute companion Strika and soon begins to fight and to win a series of promotions on the field. Becoming a child soldier, Agu will thus lose the innocence of childhood.
