Plot – Two rival gangs are competing for the West Side territory, a New York working-class neighborhood. One is the white Jets, led by Riff, and the other is the Puerto Rican Sharks, led by Bernardo. A further cause of dispute is the love of former Jets member Tony for Maria, Bernardo's sister. The Sharks' leader is against this love and challenges the Jets: following a war council, the two gangs decide to limit the challenge to an unarmed fight, but the meeting degenerates and blood is shed during the fight. Riff gets stabbed and Tony, blinded by wrath and wanting to avenge him, stabs Bernardo. Maria, hearing the news of her brother's death, rejects Tony. Later, though, she realizes that he was victim of the circumstances and sends someone to look for him. While looking for Tony, the messenger gets mistreated by the Jets and in revenge falsely announces that Maria also died. Tony, desperate, goes in search of the killer. Discovering his beloved alive, he runs towards her when a gunshot avenges the death of Bernardo. Only over Tony's dead body do the two gangs finally make peace.
