The ambitious Ed Exley, the funny Jack Vincennes and the naive Bud White are three policemen trying in different ways to make a career and to be successful. Jack arrests celebrities from the entertainment world thanks to Sid, an unscrupulous magazine editor. An incorruptible cop who believes that those who make mistakes should pay denounces the violent excesses of some colleagues during Christmas night, getting a promotion. Bud witnesses the death of his colleague who was supposed to retire. He starts an intense investigation which eventually leads him to criminal plots that involve the criminals and the police. Lynn is the go-between, a girl who looks like Veronica Lake and is part of a team of look-alike actresses led by tycoon Pierce. The circle narrows and Bud and Ed face a terrible truth.

“- Jack Vincennes: Why in the world do you wanna go digging any deeper into the Nite Owl killings, Lieutenant?
